Laminex NZ is the home of practical surface solutions in New Zealand. With a portfolio of 12 brands, including Caesarstone, Formica, Seratone and Malteca, Laminex brings innovative products with the leading colours and decors to the New Zealand building products market.

Scope

The client was concerned about the health and safety of their staff. The current warehouse layout stored High Pressure Laminate vertically, which was physically hard on their staff. The awkward nature of moving the product in this way also risked damage to the product.

Challenge

The client needed to change the layout of their product to reduce the potential for physical exhaustion or harm to their staff during handling without compromising on storage capacity in an already tight space. Due to the space constraints, installation would be challenging, with the product having to be assembled like a jigsaw.

Solution

The team at PRS Christchurch devised a unique and novel solution for the product’s handling issue. They proposed storing the product horizontally instead of vertically using Industrial Longspan shelving instead of standard pallet racking, which offered more storage capacity than their competitor’s solutions.

By storing sheets of Laminex horizontally instead of vertically, the volume of product able to be stored increased significantly. It also meant that one staff member (instead of two) could move Laminex sheets safely with less risk of strain on staff or product damage. Picking was faster, and therefore, their staff could be more productive with less physical work.

PRS Christchurch installed Longspan shelving with 60mm beams, allowing more levels to be added to each bay, which significantly increased storage capacity.

Installing the Longspan MDF shelving was very challenging. Everything had to be done in a particular sequence to get everything in—quite a fiddly and time-consuming job, but worth it for the great outcome for the client.
